I first heard this song performed by Marianne Faithfull on "Twentieth Century Blues" and it immediately became one of my favorite songs. There are so many haunting versions of note out there by Teresa Stratas, Ute Lemper, Angelina Reaux, Gisella May, etc.
All chillingly beautiful.
Kurt Weill was a refugee in Paris circa 1934, after barely escaping the Nazis in Berlin. You can just see him staring at the Seine contemplating the sad state of the world on the eve of the great conflagration.
